Lady Vansittart

 

The Garden, 1887, 3:318: Large, semi-double, white, striped rose pink, with holly-like foliage. Puddle and Hanger, 1960, RHS., The Rhododendron & Camellia Yearbook, No.14, pp.153, 154: Semi-double, 6-9 cm across, predominantly white with Carmine Rose 621 streaks and blotched; petals, 18-19 in 3 rows, 4.5 cm x 4.5 cm, obovate to orbicular, apex undu­late; stamens in central mass, filaments sometimes petaloid. Leaves dark green glossy, nar­rowly elliptic to elliptic, margins finely and sharply serrate, apex Long-acuminate, 10 cm long x 4-5 cm wide. Plant habit compact, slender. Imported from Japan and obtained by L. van Houtte, Belgium, from whom it was secured by the Caledonia Nurseries, Guernsey. It is a most variable variety producing the sports: Yours Truly, Lady Vansittart Blush, Lady Vansittart Pink, Lady Vansittart White, ‘Frances McLanahan’. Orthographic errors: ‘Lady Van Settie’, ‘Lady Van Sitart’, ‘Lady Van Sittard’, ‘Lady Van Sittart’, ‘Lady Van Sitti’, ‘Lady Vansette’, ‘Lady Vansetti’, ‘Lady Vansettie’, ‘Lady Vansittaart’, ‘Lady Vansitart’, ‘Lady Vansittard’, ‘Countess Devansittart’, ‘Vansittart’, ‘Mdm Vansittart’, ‘Lady v.Sittart’.
